To reset the Windows 8.1 Start Screen tiles to the default original layout, access the Desktop and launch Explorer. Enter the following text in the location bar:
%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\
Within the returned folder, two files should be present:
appsFolder.itemdata-ms
appsFolder.itemdata-ms.bak
Back up these two files to another location and remove them from the default path. Restart the computer or log off and back in. The Start Screen should be back to the original defaults.
